Over 50 participants took part in the Harrisburg Young Professionals (HYP) charity event, "Race Through Harrisburg," based on the popular CBS reality show The Amazing Race on October 25, 2008. The Race kicked off at Harrisburg University's Student Center and finished at Molly Brannigans. Teams received clues that guided them to businesses and historic sites in Harrisburg. The Green Team, Jen Scaringi, Ryan Buehner and Tammy Fox, scored the highest number of points in the shortest time to win first place. Chris Zeigler, Ralph Vartan, Megan McGowan and Mandy Watts of the Red Team came in second place. The Blue Team, Rob Taylor, Pat Shaughnessy, Dan Lyons and David Chu, came in a close third.
HYP President Wendell Hoover presented Downtown Daily Bread, a soup kitchen that provides hot, nutritious meals to the needy in Harrisburg, with a check for $1,400 in honor of its 25th anniversary. Proceeds also benefited the HYP Mural Project, which is a partnership with Harrisburg University and Barak, Inc. to offer students the opportunity to work with professional artists to create a mural to illustrate why they have chosen to pursue degrees in the science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) fields.
